Before researching on quality of life,we must first define the concept and grasp both its nature and extension of its definition in a comprehensive and objective way. In 1958,the concept of quality of life was first brought up by American economist John Kenneth Galbraith in his book The Affluent Society. He asserted that the quality of life is the enjoyment and pleasure that people have received from comfort, convenience and spirit. Some scholars believe that welfare economist Pigou(Pigou A.C.)of the Cambridge School was the first scholar who explicitly employed the concept of “quality of life” to describe the non-economic aspects of welfare in The Economics of Welfare in 1920(Zhou et. al,2009). The research history of “quality of life” shows that it had become a specialized field of study in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In 1957,American scholars such as Gurin,Veroff and Feld conducted a significant survey on the quality of life in the US,mainly focusing on the Americans’ mental health and well-being. Among the early researches,Raymond Bauer,a Harvard Business School professor,is considered to be the pioneer of this discipline,as he was the first scholar who officially introduced the term of “quality of life” in his Social Indicators,a book published in 1966. In 1971 Rostow put forward the argument that the pursuit of quality of life is the inevitable trend of development of human society. In 1967,Angus Campbell and some other scholars had defined the quality of life as the general perception towards happiness in life(Yi,1998). The economist Goulet(Goulet,1971)explained the improvement of quality of life from a development perspective, pointing out that the development contains at least three aspects:survival,self-esteem and freedom. Most Western scholars tend to define the concept of quality of life from people’s subjective feelings.
